Today I’m going to tell you how I took a smart approach to turn my gut into six pack abs. I really owe it all to a guy named Mike Geary and his Truth About Abs site. If I didn’t accidentally find Mike’s page, I probably would have wasted 4 months doing crunches with no results. Click here to visit Mike’s site.

I’m stubborn. Always have been. So when my bud Jeff bet me $300 that I couldn’t lose 25 pounds before summer (it was February), I was determined to prove him wrong and take his money.

Problem was I had really let myself go. I was a pretty thin guy growing up but years of sitting behind my computer and not exercising had really taken it’s toll. To be honest I was pretty embarrassed about how big my gut had gotten. I wouldn’t even take my shirt off to go into a pool anymore. Plus I hadn’t had a date in years because I was just too embarrassed to even talk to girls, much less ask them out. I had done a good job of ignoring it all until Jeff started really talking sh#% about my gut sticking out.

I laughed it off but inside I was burning up with anger. That’s when Jeff told me he’d bet money I couldn’t lose the gut. As soon as we shook hands on the bet, I made a REAL decision that I would not only win the bet, but I would get a six pack before summer. I knew I’d have to work hard but I didn’t care.

“Screw Jeff, I’ll show him” is what I thought.

Now that my money and my pride was on the line, I knew I needed a smart strategy to lose the weight and get abs. I thought about joining a gym but really didn’t want to do the whole gym thing. I thought about ordering one of those crazy ab machines but knew that wouldn’t be enough…so I headed off to good ole Google to do some research.

After about 7 hours I came across Mike Geary’s site. His site explained how certain foods can assist the fat burning process in your body. Now I was getting somewhere. I kept reading and quickly discovered that Mike had boiled this whole “losing belly fat” thing down to a true science. I was shocked to learn that I could lose my belly without even doing a ton of cardio. Click here to see the same presentation that I saw.

Long story short, I followed Mike’s advice. It was all based on science and made perfect sense to me. I actually had confidence it would work. That helped me stick to the program. I kept track of my progress and took pictures along the way. Here’s my before and after:

It’s funny to post that picture because I never believe before and after pictures when I see them. That’s why I decided to take pictures along the way. In all honesty, having my mom take that “before” picture was the last time I wanted to be seen like that…so I started taking pictures again after about a month. Overall following Geary’s advice was the key to dropping the weight for me. But I almost didn’t even do it. When I first got his guide, I was a bit overwhelmed with all of the different exercises he showed. Some of them required equipment that I didn’t have. I was a bit disappointed at first.

But then I saw that Mike laid out a bunch of different workouts to choose from. So I just chose the ones I liked and that required the least amount of equipment. I mainly just used some dumbells and an old yoga mat I got from my sister.

So that’s my story. I am still shocked at how well Mike’s advice worked. I started seeing results so quick just by following what he said (what exercises to do, what food to avoid, what foods to eat, etc). It really was a hell of alot easier than I thought it would be. And I’m now $300 richer because he gave me a proven strategy to follow;-). I now refer to my midsection as my Smart Abs;-)

I started the Smart Abs site to dispel the rumors about flattening your stomach. If you think sit-ups of effective crunches alone will do the job, you’ve been lied to.

The truth is working the abdominal muscles alone is not enough. In fact, most people work these muscles too much. Only so much can be accomplished with abdominal exercises alone due to the amount of body fat that your body has. The key is to incorporate workouts that burn body fat. This means strength traning that focuses on your entire body rather than just your core. The less body fat you are carrying throughout your body, the better your abs will look.

Diet is also a crucial part of flattening your stomach the “smart abs” way. Don’t worry, you don’t need to become a health nut overnight. It’s more about making strategic decisions when you eat. There are certain foods that you want to avoid as much as possible and other that will actually help burn body fat. Understanding how diet plays into flattening your stomach is not difficult but it is beyond the scope of this post.  In future posts, I will tell you exactly where you can find all the info you need to be a smart abs success.

Nowadays there are no shortage of new fads and gimmicks to trim your waistline and get you those killer abs you have always wanted. The big question is always the same: Will this new pill, workout machine, or diet give me the results I’m looking for? Unfortunately in most cases the answer is no.

Most so called “ab training” programs revolve solely around your exercise routine. While the exercises you do are a vital part of any ab training regimen, exercise alone simply will not produce six pack abs. I dubbed this site “Smart Abs” because it is all about a smarter approach to achieving long term results as quickly as possible. This happens by attacking the problem from multiple angles. These angles include diet, exercise, and science.

By understanding why we do not have six pack abs, we can start to do things the “Smart Abs” way. Understanding the underlying problems will go a long way toward producing the desired result. In future posts, I will detail specific techniques that you can use to begin dropping body fat and toning up your abs quickly.
